The US Film Academy, which launched an investigation into the scandal involving Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars on March 28, issued another statement condemning the actor’s actions. Document published Variety magazine.
The statement reminded members of the Academy of the disciplinary proceedings against Smith, who slapped Chris Rock for joking about the haircut of his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, who suffers from hair loss. The organization will check the actor’s actions for violation of accepted rules of conduct, including – “inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, as well as violation of the integrity of the Academy.”
The next meeting of the Academy’s board will be held on April 18. It can take any disciplinary action, including suspension and expulsion. The actor himself can give an official written answer to the Academy before this meeting.
The organization apologized to Chris Rock, as well as to the nominees, guests and spectators of the ceremony for witnessing Smith’s “deeply shocking and traumatic” actions. The statement said that after the incident, the actor was asked to leave the ceremony, but he refused.
No action was taken after the refusal, and Smith received his first career Oscar for Best Actor in King Richard. In his speech when receiving the statuette, the actor apologized for his behavior to the Film Academy and colleagues. He later apologized publicly to Chris Rock.
