The State Hermitage has asked two Italian museums to return 25 paintings previously transferred for their exhibitions, reports RIA Novosti with reference to representatives of Italian museum sites.
The works of art must be returned by the end of March 2022. For example, at the Palazzo Reale in Milan, the St. Petersburg Museum asked for Titian’s Portrait of a Young Woman and Giovanni Cariani’s Temptation (The Old Man and the Young Woman), two weeks on display.
At the Gallerie D’Italia (Milan), 23 paintings belonging to the Hermitage are on display at the European Grand Tour. In total, it presents about 130 paintings. “Our exhibition closes on March 27, we must return the paintings a week before,” said representatives of Gallerie D “Italia”.
Italian Minister of Culture Dario Francescini pointed out that the Milan City Hall and the private Gallerie were organizing the exhibitions. “But it seems clear to me that when an owner asks for his work back, it must be returned,” Francescini concluded.
Earlier reportedthat the exhibits of the Morozov brothers’ collection will return from Paris to Russia.
