“I’m a rat – you’re a rat”: A review of the film “Morbius”

Morbius

The world is moving forward, and the industry is stalling for the second year in a row, often putting fillers in cinemas instead of blockbusters. Last year, the Marvel studio earned a penny with the failure of “Eternal” and “Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings” – this year the rod is thrown by Sony. “Morbius” is the same optional movie, where everything is mediocre, and the clichés are taken directly from the superhero movies of the 2000s. The plot of “Morbius”, to put it mildly, is reminiscent of “Spider-Man 3: Enemy in Reflection” by Sam Raimi and the forgotten “New Spider-Man” by Mark Webb with the story of the lizard: scientist Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) suffers from a rare disease and invents »From his illness. Morbius decided to mix the DNA of a bat and a human, turning himself into a vampire. At the wave of a magic wand and a medical syringe, the plasma of the two creatures mixed and worked wonders – Morbius was healed, his body swelled with muscles, but there was a thirst for blood. His equally ill and complex brother Milo (Matt Smith) uses the essence thoughtlessly, although 20 years ago Uncle Ben told Peter Parker that the more power, the more responsibility.

Genetically, Morbius is part of a global trend where in some stories the villain is rehabilitated and in others he is not. In our case, the villain is represented as a good man who saves the world from his invention. The tendency to reject villains is due to the fact that his image is always associated with some social or ethnic group, which can then take offense. Therefore, Hollywood bosses decided that it was better to do without antagonists or to expose white privileged cisgender men and women as them.

This complicated the task for the screenwriters, because now the conflicts of the characters must be internal, it is necessary to develop the psychology of the characters. Dr. Morbius struggles with himself and his envious brother because he does not want to harm the world: the idea is eternal, but reworked by superhero movies for a long time. Also, the conflict between the brothers is so small, and their relationship and past is given a minimum of time, which is why the pathos of the action lies at the level of a family quarrel, where the younger envies the older.

It would seem that a film about vampires must be bloody and cruel, but no, the age rating is PG-13. Sony and Marvel only once allow themselves a deep cut in the middle, in other cases they hide any violence, although the authors use elements of horror (for example, a corridor with flashing lights). One could show sharp fangs penetrating bodies and drying them out, but one vampire pacifist, Morbius, drinks artificial blood invented a few years ago, and his brother Milo prefers to kill outside the frame or drag victims into the bushes.

Morbius could have had the original content, but instead some clichés. The “girl in danger” trail is there; cheap parody of Hans Zimmer – present; stupid and unnecessary police – also in line. Not only is the opportunity to create horror lost, but so is an attempt at some kind of social commentary. The brothers are rich Englishmen, so becoming vampires could be an allusion to a capitalist society where elites profit from the lower class. This is also not the case, as is the discussion about the dangers of scientific knowledge and experiments on humans. A love line could be developed where Michael worries about his girlfriend and colleague Martin (Adria Archona), but the film has too much of a competitor in this field – the Twilight franchise (2008-2012). That’s why “Morbius” turned out to be a picture without landmarks, without any good reason for its existence, released due to the desire of Sony and Marvel to suck money from fans. Only if Morbius turned into a predator, the project of the same name degenerated into a parasite.
