Leading

It will be recalled that this time the hosts returned to the ceremony after 4 years of absence, and this time there were three of them. Actresses and comics Regina Hall, Wanda Sykes and Amy Schumer united with their appearances all the performances and awards in a single show. But is it so good?

They started the show with a predictable joke: “Three women were hired for the ceremony because it’s still cheaper than hiring one man,” and continued with cosplays of characters from popular movies. In those moments, the show turned into a strange comedy, which, although discharging gloss (and in some places dramatic), but resembled a kind of cabbage.

But there were also great jokes: from confused ones Timothy Shalame and J.K. Simmons before going out into the hall to shake up the nominees awaiting the awards. So it is not so easy to conclude whether you need presenters or not without them. At all the Oscar ceremonies, bad jokes are interspersed with funny ones, and the point here is the script as a whole, the courage and sense of taste of the director of each particular show, not the choice of an individual comedian.

The main drama

Yes, bad jokes happen at the Oscars often, but infrequently their authors receive a blow to the jaw. So it happened with Chris Rockwho joked about a short haircut Jade Pinkett Smithafter which Will Smith went up on stage and hit the comedian in the face. And then, returning to the place, he continued to answer Roku with his voice. He had no choice but to end his monologue, noting that this would probably be the greatest night in the history of American television. The audience could only laugh awkwardly.

A little later, Smith took the stage again – for the award for best actor in the lead male role. In a speech of thanks, he apologized to the Film Academy, saying that the most important thing in life is to protect his family, as his character in the film did. “King Richard”. And he cried.

In comments and social networks, viewers continue to argue that this was the case. Maybe a trick to boost broadcast ratings? The latter, of course, is doubtful. The film academy is going to do a lot of tricks to watch its shows, but it certainly would not resort to breaking the law and the boulevard. Later, all the media noted that Smith’s wife did not choose such a hairstyle herself, but suffers from alopecia (an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss).

The main touching moment

Last year’s winner announced the winner in the nomination for Best Supporting Actor Yoon Yo-john, everyone’s favorite grandmother from “Minari”. Troy Kotsur from the indie melodrama “CODA: The Child of Deaf Parents” became the first deaf person in the history of the award to win an Oscar. Yun presented him with the award, showing her name in sign language, and then carefully picked up the statuette so that he could give a speech of thanks. The whole hall applauded him also in sign language.

Although it was not the only golden statuette of the film “CODA: The Child of Deaf Parents”, and, moreover, one of the most predictable awards of the whole ceremony, it is the release of Troy Kotsura will be remembered by viewers and critics for a long time.

The main film of the fans

Remember this year that moviegoers chose their favorite movie by voting on Twitter? The Army of the Dead became them Zach Snydershot for Netflix. After all, Snyder boasts the most loyal army of fans, at least among active Internet users.

The audience also chose the most favorite moment of the film in the history of cinema. It was, suddenly, an accelerating Flash out Justice League the same Zach Snyder. Recall, fans of the director tried to promote “Snydercat” in the previous category, but without success: the original film was released in 2017.

And what about politics?

Contrary to expectations, the ceremony was quite apolitical. But, of course, the organizers could not completely ignore the main world drama of today.

Mila Kunis declared a minute of silence for the dead in Ukraine, and the Film Academy expressed support for the entire Oscar community to those who are experiencing dark times. Badges in support were seen every now and then on the clothes of the guests: they were put on Pedro Almodovar, Guillermo del Toro, Jamie Lee Curtis, Yoon Yo-john and Jason Momoa.

But in general, both speeches and jokes were quite toothless. Inherited only domestic American laws discrediting different groups of the population. For example, the leaders passed a bill from the state of Florida, which prohibits the discussion of sexual orientation in schools (the governor of Florida supported the project, and the US president opposed it).

Different oddities

Every year, at the end of the ceremony, the audience is shown a video In Memoriam, which mentions the filmmakers who died in the last year. Usually a sentimental song is performed during this video, giving the opportunity to say goodbye to the departed. This year the video was shown under an optimistic number with a choir and dances. Although gospel as a genre fits the theme, but this performance has diverted attention from those for whom everything was started. It was a bit strange decision that the three heroes of the sad video were presented separately: with a story about what they were like as professionals and people. It was a shame for the others.

Many celebrities appeared in the broadcast of the ceremony for literally 30-40 seconds, apparently just so that the organizers could put a tick that worked out the entire audience of the show. So, for example, with a not very clear goal, members of the K-pop group BTS appeared on the screens and said that they really like Disney cartoons.

Many anniversaries

All the spectators were waiting for the 50th anniversary to be celebrated at the Oscars “Godfather”the great saga Francis Ford Coppola. Recently, the director was finally awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and it was not surprising when he came on stage himself, and with him Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

The winner in the category of “Best Actor” (which was won by Will Smith) was announced Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta. Their company celebrated the film’s 28th birthday “Criminal reading” and specifically the dance from it. This was not the most obvious choice: 28 years old is still not 50, well, okay. Who doesn’t want to think about Tarantino once again?

The Academy also celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of the film “White People Can’t Jump”, inviting the main characters in it. Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson. So it became clear why Snipes, who is on the wave of popularity, was not on the list of participants in the ceremony. But why the organizers chose such an not-so-obvious film to celebrate remains unclear.

Well, at the end of the ceremony they remembered about another big anniversary – the musical “Cabaret” with Lisa Minelli in the lead role. The tape was released in 1972. It is for this festive reason that the winner in the nomination “Best Film” was announced by Minelli in the company of another star of musicals. Lady Gagoy.

Celebrating the films is a good thing, but many critics were surprised that these films were given more screen time than many nominees.

Winners (and no)

A little about surprises in the most important thing – victories and defeats. She became this year’s record holder “Dune”. The film Denis Villeneuve received statuettes for best soundtrack, sound, work of cameraman and production designer, editing and visual effects. But due to the innovation, almost all of the winners were named before the start of the broadcast.

The main film of the ceremony was “CODA: a child of deaf parents”, a sweet indie melodrama about a family of hard of hearing fishermen, in which a talented singer grows up. Director Shan Heider’s film is a remake of a French comedy about a family of farmers, which not only did not prevent the film from becoming a winner, but also helped earn another award – in the nomination “Best Adapted Screenplay”.

The film “Eyes of Tammy Faye”, a biopic about TV evangelists p Jessica Chastain in the lead role, like “CODA”, took all the “Oscars” for which he was nominated: best female role and best makeup and hairstyles.

Triumphant of the award season (the film was nominated for 11 Oscars in 11 nominations), “The Power of the Dog” Jane Campionin the end received only one statuette – for best director.

Belfast Kenneth Bran beat Licorice Pizza Paul Thomas Anderson in the “Best Original Script” category. Diane Warren, a 13-time Best Song nominee, was left without an Oscar. The composer does not despair, but continues to joke vigorously about his total bad luck. This time, for example, she grabbed a piece of paper in her purse stating that she had won the nomination. And what is left if the organizers do not stock up!

Top dresses, suits and (missing) shirts

No ceremony is complete without destroying or creating fashion trends. This year, for example, young actors have shaken up the usual approach to how to look at the world’s main film ceremony. Fashion critics are looking in the archives to see if anyone has appeared at the Oscars in all those 94 shirtless years, and no, Timothy Shalameapparently, really such one.

Kristen Stewart, Zendeya and Uma Thurman showed a trend towards rethinking office fashion, and Stewart also abandoned the classic long dresses and plumes.

Black became the main color of women’s dresses. In 2018, the nominees chose black for the Golden Globe ceremony to express support for the movement #metoo. On March 27 this year, the choice of black was for many a continuation of the struggle for women’s rights, for some – mourning for the dead in Ukraine, but for some it is a matter of taste. Her black Gucci dress, for example, was remembered by Billy Ailish: it went well with her black hair color, but contrasted somewhat with the song No Time To Die, for which the singer won an Oscar.

As every year, someone at the Oscars uses clothes as an important statement. This year it got a special sound: the winner decided to speak in the language of dresses for the best costumes in the film Cruella Jenny Bevan. She came to the ceremony in an unfinished tuxedo, protesting against the unfair pay of her colleagues in Hollywood.
