Film Distributor’s Bulletin: Cannes Film Festival to consider films by three Russian directors

Written by admin

Films by Kirill Serebrennikov, Alexander Sokurov and Andrei Zvyagintsev will be eligible to participate in the main program of the Cannes Film Festival, regardless of the international situation and their funding by the state. About this reported sources related to the Russian and French film industries to the Bulletin of the Film Distributor (BC).

On March 1, the Cannes Film Festival announced its refusal to receive an official Russian delegation and “anyone affiliated with the Russian government” this year. BC does not name the reason why the festival still intends to consider films by Messrs. Serebrennikov, Sokurov and Zvyagintsev. Earlier, Cannes said it wanted to “pay tribute to the courage of all those in Russia who risked protesting.”

Alexander Sokurov intends to apply for his film “Fairy Tale”. This is a fantastic story about the events of World War II.

“We are finalizing the latest edits to rewrite the film and will send (the application.” Kommersant), – said Mr. Sokurov TASS“We’ll probably do it on the weekends or at the beginning of that week.”

Thus in conversation with RIA Novosti the director said he did not know why “an exception” was being made for him. He noted that his previous work “Francophonie” was not included in the main program of the review “due to the orders of some services.”

Another contender for the Cannes 2022 is Kirill Serebrennikov’s biographical drama Tchaikovsky’s Wife. The film starred One Byron, Alena Mikhailova, Julia Aug, rapper Oxxxymiron.

Andrei Zvyagintsev has no new projects. Back in February, he was recovering from a coronavirus.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival is scheduled for May 17-28.
