The 64th Grammy Awards of the American Academy of Recording Arts took place at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. Jazzman John Batiste received the most awards – five. Grammy tells about the most human ceremony in its entire history Boris Barabanov.
John Batiste is a native of New Orleans. His family is full of jazz musicians. Before the full-length cartoon “Soul” with its music was released in 2020, Batista was known mainly as the music director of the TV show Stephen Colbert and the creative director of the Jazz Museum in Harlem. Shortly after the release of “Souls”, John Batiste released the album “We Are”, the eighth in his career. Attention to the person of John Batista was added by his participation in the anti-racist rallies of 2020 – he played them with the orchestra. So 11 Grammy nominations are the result of both Batista’s creative and social activities. However, only five nominations turned into awards. Among other things, John Batiste won a Grammy for “Album of the Year”, that is, he won one of the four major nominations. In the “Record of the Year” nomination, Batiste lost to the Silk Sonic duo (Bruno Mars and Anderson Pak). Silk Sonic also won a Grammy for “Song of the Year” – “Leave The Door Open”. In the fourth of the main nominations, “Best New Artist”, the award went to Olivia Rodrigo.
Foo Fighters won all the fateful nominations. Including in two nominations “Best Rock Song” and “Best Rock Album” Americans surpassed Paul McCartney. On March 24, it was announced that the musicians will perform at the Grammy Awards. However, two days later the group had to cancel the performance due to sad circumstances. Drummer Taylor Hawkins died during the Foo Fighters tour. The official cause of death has not yet been named. Toxicological examination showed that his blood contained ten different substances in quantities and combinations incompatible with life.
It could be assumed that the members of the recording academy with their votes in favor of Foo Fighters honored the memory of Taylor Hawkins. However, the voting ended on January 5, so the Foo Fighters are really the best in rock according to the academy.
The program of the ceremony included a speech by John Legend. But when host Trevor Noah announced his release, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky appeared on screens with a pre-recorded address to the guests of the ceremony and the audience. His address lasted 1 minute 20 seconds and according to the laws of the Russian Federation can not be reproduced here in whole or in part. John Legend played the new song “Free”. As the musician commented on his Twitter, “Free” is a prayer for world peace, a prayer for refugees of all nationalities, religions and skin colors, longing for a safe place to live and prosper. On the stage, John Legend was joined by Denver-based bandurist Suzanne Iglidan of Odessa, Ivano-Frankivsk singer Mika Newton, also living in the United States, and Donbass poetess Luba Yakimchuk.
The “female voice” was well heard throughout the last Grammy ceremony. Trevor Noah recalled that over the past two years, the music industry has been in a stupor, and if music authors and performers could make money from streaming or online concerts, an army of stage workers, lighting engineers, sound engineers and stage managers remained. without means of subsistence. And yet the industry has survived and is coming back to life. The embodiment of this return were women whose names are unknown to anyone – make-up artists, costume designers, tour managers. For the first time, people working behind the scenes became full participants in the main music ceremony of the year. In this, and not in the one to whom the dress was sewn by Givenchy and Versace, was the beauty and fairness of the ceremony.
