The book, through documents, photographs and eyewitness accounts, tells how during the Great Patriotic War in 1941, about 1.2 million exhibits were sent from the State Hermitage to Ekaterinburg, most of which were housed in the Sverdlovsk Art Gallery.

The book is published in the year of the 80th anniversary of the evacuation of the Hermitage Assembly from Leningrad to Sverdlovsk and in the year of the opening of the Hermitage-Ural Center in Yekaterinburg. The first presentation of the collection took place on November 11 as part of the Hermitage Days in St. Petersburg.
